Give two artists the same paint & brushes & they’ll create vastly different scenes.
Hire two copywriters to write an article & they’ll both tell different stories.
So what sets them apart? Industry expertise or subject matter, sure.
But deeper than that it’s the creator’s perspective that gives them a certain edge- that lets their work or content stand out to you over others.
It’s their experiences, their style & approach, which is being constantly cultivated.
The taste you develop is inevitably one of a kind.
As a freelance designer, people hire me for my taste. They hire me for my experience, my style & the perspective I bring.
So I spend a lot of time cultivating & nurturing those taste buds, you could say.
TO NURTURE TASTE: compiled thoughts
it comes completely from within - what holds your attention? follow rabbit holes!! daydream!
nurturing your taste helps you become a more authentic version of yourself because you’re learning more about yourself through the process. (the key to personal branding)
& it is a process. it takes time. it doesn’t happen overnight & it’s never-ending. enjoy it.
be aware of your consumption habits - especially digital media.
there is a LOT out there. seek out what interests you. (don’t rely on algorithms) (or trends!)
keep archives, combine ideas, create new from the old.
individuality is invaluable
so is your ability to be your true self while constantly evolving into better versions.
trust yourself. there is no competition or societal pressure here.

People call it many different things but it’s all you, babe.
People who cultivate taste pay attention. They’re curious & immerse themselves in the topics that interest them. However, nothing is done quickly. They develop a certain eye or original approach through years of trial & error, vulnerability & attention.
This is your natural edge in the competition, the ultimate niche.

Lummi is a stock image site made of entirely AI-generated images. Kind of strange/creepy to look through knowing it’s all fake.
A must-read on pricing for creatives by one of my favorite letting artists & designers.
An amazing talk by Collins on their process, “Courage Against Conformity”.

Stumbled across this German website that seems to be a collection of zines or publications or maybe artists’ work. Either way, I found some great inspiration (I love Dada)
